Built more than 75 years ago, Bessie and Walter Bellingrath had no idea that their land will expand 65 acres and become one of the most visited destinations in Alabama in the U.S, according the a Bellingrath Gardens brochure. The Bellingrath Gardens, located in Theodore, Alabama, near Mobile, are some of the most beautiful gardens in the Southeast. With its dainty pink, vibrant red, and brilliant yellow roses, the Bellingrath rose garden, constructed in 1935 is a dream come true for romantics. Butterflies float throughout the gardens in mild weather, but they are particularly attracted to the butterfly garden, an area with flowers adored by butterflies and hummingbirds. Visit the Historic Bellingrath Home in AlabamaAlthough most guests are content simply to tour the luscious gardens, the 15-room Bellingrath home is teeming with furniture and antiques garnered by Mrs. Bellingrath. She collected china, porcelain and silver among other items. During the Depression, neighbors often sold their family heirlooms to the Bellingraths in hopes to garner enough money to survive. Mrs. Bellingrath usually bought the items, rarely saying that she had too much. She helped many people, a Bellingrath home tour guide said. The tour of the home includes rooms where the Bellingraths relaxed and entertained, and antiques like plate warmers and old-fashioned stoves. The antiques give visitors a peak into another era. Tours of the home are available throughout opening hours. The next available tour is posted at the entrance to the Bellingrath home. See the Holiday Lights in the Bellingrath Gardens in Theodore, Ala. Millions of brilliant lights twinkle on the grounds during the holidays. Children will love the light display, which is located throughout the property, including on the lakes. The holiday lights display is available after Thanksgiving through the Christmas holiday in the United States. According to the Bellingrath Gardens website, garden hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in December. The garden is open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The home and gardens are closed on Christmas. The property is open later during the holiday season; the Magical Lights show is open until 9 p.m., starting after Thanksgiving and ending on New Year’s Eve. Come to the gardens early and plan to spend several hours touring the property and the home. Bring an extra camera or batteries for cameras, and expect to take hundreds of pictures. Entry is $19 for adults to visit the home and gardens and $11.50 for children 5 to 12, the website stated. Entry is free for children under 5 years old.
