Montgomery, Alabama Family Attraction

Looking for a fun family activity in the Southeastern United States? Then be sure to check out the Montgomery Zoo in Alabama!

The Montgomery Zoo is one of this Alabama city’s underrated treasures. At over 48 acres, the zoo boasts over 700 animals representing over 100 species. Yes, the zoo is small, but that is no reason to overlook this family-oriented attraction. In fact, the zoo’s size is not only part of its charm, but seems to be a direct result of the zoo administration choosing to focus on quality over quantity. This value, too, is seen in the zoo’s extensive use of “barrier-free” enclosures. Instead of fences or gates, many of the animals are separated from visitors by clever use of water features such as moats. This not only makes the enclosures look more humane, but is often beautiful in and of itself. The city, which owns the zoo, should be applauded for its efforts.

Exhibits

Along with aviaries and a reptile house, the zoo is divided into five main sections: Africa, North America, South America, Asia, and Australia (which closes in the winter). Four of the sections have a large habitat showcasing up to half a dozen species. For instance, “North America” has white-tailed deer, bison, big horn sheep, and elk while “Australia” showcases emus, kangaroos, wallabies, and, across a “river”, warthogs. The "Africa" enclosure boasts zebras, kudus, and two types of gazelles.

Unfortunately, because the central exhibits are so large and have several different species in the same space, it can be hard to examine individual species up close. However, the zoo does a good job of mixing these large, "open plain" exhibits with smaller, more focused enclosures. Signature animals, like lions, Bengal tigers, elephants, giraffes, chimpanzees, and black leopards have their own spaces. All the exhibits can be easily seen in one leisurely visit, making it ideal for families with small children.

Mann Museum

For an additional fee, visitors to the Montgomery Zoo can head to the on-site Mann Museum. This natural history museum boasts 250 exhibits, with over 70 life-size specimen and some interactive displays.

Overlook Café

This fast food restaurant, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, offers typical zoo fair – hamburgers, French fries, and the like. It is worth the stop, however, for the view. Instead of taking the stairs, visitors should go up the ramp to enjoy the exotic birds on exhibit. At the top, excellent views of the lions (as well as the big Asia habitat) greet guests.

Train

A small train runs around the perimeter of the zoo. With only one start and stopping point, little guide information, and minimal views of the animals, the train doesn’t much add to the zoo experience… but it is a fun little ride nonetheless, particularly for young children.

Zoo Hours

  • 9:00 am to 5:00 pm seven days a week (last ticket sold at 4:30 pm)
  • Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day

First trip and we were pleasantly surprised. The grounds are not huge but you get to see as many animals at this zoo as you do at most places that are much bigger. They do a great job of presenting viewing areas where you can get as close to the animals as any zoo we have been. They do a particularly good job with the big cats. (Bengal Tigers, Lions and an awesome Jaguar) I would recomend this zoo to anybody who hasn't been. The train ride is fun. You don't see most of the animals from the ride but it is a good change of pace for something different for the kids. Also a very clean facility so we joined and look forward to going back many times.
